A couple of weeks ago, I’ve got invited to attend the German Porridge Championships. I wasn’t really sure if I should go but with my boyfriend being half Scottish and the ‘prize’ to win would be a trip to Scotland to attend the World Championships, I’ve decided to take part. We had to create a classical porridge just using oats, water and salt and a creative recipe. Whenever I did oatmeal before, I would always go for plant based milk instead of water. I just couldn’t imagine how it could become creamy only with water but the secret is in the timing. Find the recipe below. Oh, and I didn’t win, but had lots of fun!
Recipe:
- 60g oats
- 500 ml water
- 1/2 tsp salt
Bring the water to boil and stir in the oats, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Whisk regularly. Add the salt and stir well and cook over low heat for another 10-15 minutes until the consistency becomes super creamy.
I love to have oatmeal with a homemade berry sauce for which I just boil some frozen berries with lemon juice and some sugar over medium heat.
That’s it! It sounds so simple and it is indeed, but just be patient and take your time.
