Scotland was always on our to do list especially with my boyfriend being half Scottish. Nevertheless it was never our first choice when it came to a summer holiday but this year we had a wedding up in Newcastle and finally decided to go further north and do our long-planned Scotland trip. We just had a week and tried to see as much as possible and it was even more stunning than I ever imagined it! Endless views, a rough sea, green hills as far as the eye can reach, beautiful landscapes and hikes, sheep, sheep – oh, did I mention the sheep?, empty roads and truly lovely people! Definitely coming back with more time and there is still loads to see but hopefully some of my tips to sleep, eat and see will help you when you have a trip planned!
Edinburgh
We just had 24 hours in Edinburgh which probably doesn’t make the city justice but I had the feeling it was enough time to stroll around the city and get to know the main sights. The old town is walkable and we had a very central hotel right opposite the Waverley Station (Motel One, nothing fancy but good value for money especially in this central location). Walk up the castle even if you don’t plan to enter! You still have an amazing view all over Edinburgh.
Places to eat
One of my favorites on this trip! It has a very funky interior, amazing vegetarian and vegan food , great cocktails and good tunes! It’s a place with kind of greasy vegan food – burgers, nachos, mac’n’cheeze…soul food at its best!
We went there for breakfast and I had one the best avocado toast and green juices for a long time! Their staff is super friendly and they are located very central not far away from Edinburgh castle. Their breakfast list is huge, I needed ages to decide what I wanna go for.
The Baked Potato Shop – 56 Cockburn St, Edinburgh EH1 1PB, UK
It’s a super tiny vegetarian / vegan take-out and perfect for an easy lunch. They serve baked potatoes with loads of different toppings to choose from (vegan haggis 😉 ), go for the small potato, even this one is huge!
Inverness
We took the train from Edinburgh to Inverness and it’s a beautiful train journey which takes around three hours. You’ll pass the Cairngorms National Park with stunning views!
We stayed in a very pretty Air BnB and were lucky that the owner was on holiday! So instead of a room we had the whole house to ourselves. Inverness itself is a pretty little town with the River Ness running through the city.
Places to eat and go out
It’s a modern restaurant in a former church with a good vegetarian menu using local produces. We ordered lots of food and wine and had a lovely evening. It’s located right next to the River Ness.
A must go when you are in Inverness and want to listen to some traditional Scottish live music!
Isle of Skye
We booked a rental car for a couple of days to drive from Inverness to the Isle of Skye and then return the car when we were flying back to London from Inverness at the end of our trip. There are two routes from Inverness to Isle of Skye, make sure you choose the one which goes along the River / Loch Ness as you will pass two pretty castles on your way!
The first one is Urquhart Castle, a ruined castle from the 16th century overlooking Loch Ness. We payed to go and it was interesting to learn more about the history. The prettier castle was the Eilean Donan Castle, I loved the atmosphere which was quite mystical. We didn’t go in but you have a good view if you just park up next to it and walk around! The whole trip from Inverness to Isle of Skye was amazing and you’ll see some amazing places.
Places to stay
We had an aaaamazing Bed and Breakfast Clach Ghlas which has just three bedrooms. Make sure you stay in the master bedroom, this was the best bed I have ever slept in and it has amazing views over the cliffs. And a jacuzzi bath 😉 The owner Ann is a funny character but very lovely and she will make sure you are well looked after. The B&B is located in a more quiet area of the Isle and I can just recommend that. Sometimes it was just us and sheep on the roads, this was the romantic Scotland how I imagined it.
Places to eat
I must be the worst food blogger ever but we were so not prepared for our trip. Just to remind you, there are almost no shops and only one supermarket on the whole island. When you are too late for lunch (2 pm) you won’t find any place which serves food until 6 pm, so be better prepared than us 😉 We would have breakfast and take an orange as snack and then realizing after hours of hiking that we are pretty hungry but there is nothing to eat 😀 Well, it was adventurous and I called it our Scotland diet.
This is an award winning restaurant and the BEST in UK. My boyfriend treated me to a lovely meal out and it was VERY delicious, quite adventurous and definitely an experience!!!
Places to see
My favorite day was when we drove up to Quairing, went on a two hours walk there, then went to see the Kilt rocks (although at this time we had pouring rain) and then did another hike to the Old Man of Storr although being exhausted by not having any food (I did mention our bad planning earlier haha). But we made it in the end and this was a great feeling!!
We continued to Portree which is a sweet little fisher town. In the evening we went to the Neist Point Lighthouse to watch the sunrise which we didn’t see (clouds) but was a special experience. There is a little hut serving warm and cold drinks which was perfect to warm up with a cup of tea.
On our first day on the Isle of Skye we also had a beautiful walk around Sligachan (check on Maps!) which wasn’t busy at all but was a pretty place on the island.
Before heading back to Inverness we stopped by the Tallisker Distillery, although we didn’t do a tour its great for little presents and they have a small visitor centre where you can read about their history.
Nairn
Its a pretty little seaside town! This stop was quite unexpected on our trip but we were so happy to have visited it. They have a pretty beach and when you are lucky enough Dolphins can be spotted! We arrived quite late and had a flight the next morning so we just had a nice walk along the beach, a delicious dinner at the Sun Dancer Restaurant and a Whiskey back at the Hotel which put us straight to sleep. Haha. The hotel we stayed in was the Invernairne Hotel and its a lovely place with a fireplace and a beautiful garden right next to the sea.
